Alberti's Legacy

Alberti has influenced our world in many ways. As a "Renaissance Man", he had many different talents. Because of this, he has works in almost all types of art and philosophy.
Art and Architecture

Without his insight in De Pictura, perspective (as an element of art) may not have been looked into for many years. In art, he is also known for proposing artistic humanism, a style of art that focused on imitating Roman and Greek art styles. De Re Arificatora became one of the staples of education. All of his books on art and sculpture became the foundation for an entirely new style of painting and sculpture that broke from Europe's Gothic past.

One of his most notable architectural works was the design of the Basilica di Sant'Andrea di Mantova, a picture of which can be seen at the end of this article. Although it was not finished in his life-time (it was completed 328 years after it was started), much of the Basilica remains true to his designs.

Other Works

In addition to his books on art and architecture, Alberti wrote many other works: I Libri della famiglia(a philosophical book on women, education, marriage and household upkeep), Philodoxius (a comedy), and Momus (a comedy about the Roman Gods). He also drew the woodcuts for Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, a strange fantasy novel.
